The Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii)

Constructed between 1609 and 1616 under the rule of Sultan Ahmed I by the master imperial architect Sedefkar Mehmed Agha (a pupil of legendary architect Mimar Sinan), the Sultan Ahmed Mosque—globally known as the Blue Mosque—dominates Istanbul’s historical peninsula. Built to rival the monumental scale of neighboring Hagia Sophia, it is renowned as the first mosque in the Ottoman Empire to feature six soaring minarets. The interior earns its popular English moniker from the breathtaking sea of over 20,000 handmade cobalt, turquoise, and emerald-green glazed Iznik tiles that adorn the upper galleries. Natural light pours through more than 200 stained-glass windows, illuminating intricate arabesque calligraphy, lavish wool carpets, and the monumental marble mihrab containing a sacred fragment of the Black Stone from Mecca. Outside, the vast stone courtyard with its central fountain forms one of the largest monumental forecourts in Islamic architecture.
