Bahla Fort (UNESCO World Heritage)

Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987, Bahla Fort is one of the most monumental earthen defensive complexes in the Islamic world. Dominating a sprawling date palm oasis in Al Dakhiliyah, the fortress served as the fortified capital of the Banu Nabhan dynasty, who dominated central Oman between the 12th and 15th centuries. Constructed entirely of unbaked mud brick, straw, and stone foundations, the fortress comprises four major structural complexes: the ancient Kasbah, the Ya'ariba House, the modern quarter, and an extensive Friday mosque. Surrounding the fort and its oasis is the legendary Sur Bahla, a 12-kilometer earthen wall reinforced with watchtowers and protected gates. Bahla is also steeped in Omani folklore and mythology as the capital of traditional magic (jinn lore) and centuries-old earthen pottery craftsmanship.
