Souq Al-Qaisariya Historic Covered Bazaar
With origins stretching back over two centuries to 1822 CE, Souq Al-Qaisariya in the city of Al-Hofuf is one of the oldest and most atmospheric covered trade bazaars in the Arabian Peninsula. Spanning more than four hundred individual shops interconnected by vaulted mudbrick corridors, the souq was engineered with high ceilings, skylight lanterns, and thick clay walls to provide natural ventilation against the Eastern Province desert heat. The market has long served as a vital trade nexus for merchant caravans traveling between the Persian Gulf, the Levant, and the interior of the Arabian Peninsula. Walking its paved alleys, the air is thick with the aromas of rare frankincense, oud, saffron, cardamom, and locally blended medicinal herbs. Travelers can browse shops operated by multi-generational merchant families selling handcrafted copper coffee pots (Dallah), traditional embroidered bisht cloaks, gold jewelry, and freshly harvested Khalas dates, capturing the timeless soul of traditional Arabian commerce.
“One of the oldest traditional covered trading markets in the Arabian Peninsula, built in 1822 with clay arches and teak ceilings.”
