Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
Inaugurated in 2001 to commemorate the 30th year of Sultan Qaboos bin Saidβs reign, the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Bawshar stands as an extraordinary triumph of contemporary Islamic architecture. Constructed from 300,000 tonnes of Indian sandstone, the complex harmonizes traditional Omani fortification aesthetics with classical Islamic geometric proportions. Its central dome rises 50 meters above the primary prayer hall, flanked by five minarets symbolizing the five pillars of Islam, the tallest towering at 90 meters. Inside the men's prayer hall, visitors encounter breath-taking craftsmanship: a 21-tonne Persian carpet hand-knotted by 600 artisans over four years, featuring 1.7 billion knots and 28 distinct vegetable-dye shades. Suspended from the central dome is an 8.5-tonne crystal chandelier manufactured by Faustig in Germany, illuminated by 1,122 halogen lamps and adorned with 24-karat gold plating. The tranquil marble courtyards, manicured gardens, and extensive Islamic library provide visitors a sanctuary of contemplative serenity in the heart of Muscat.
βA masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture and spiritual grandeur, housing one of the world's largest hand-loomed carpets and a monumental Swarovski chandelier.β
