The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı)

Established by order of Sultan Mehmed II in 1461 shortly after the conquest of Istanbul, the Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı, meaning 'Covered Market') is a pulsating labyrinth of commerce, craftsmanship, and Ottoman heritage. Stretching across 30,700 square meters between Nuruosmaniye and Beyazıt, the market grew over centuries from two core stone bedestens into an interconnected city within a city, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors daily. Beneath beautifully painted vaulted ceilings adorned with Ottoman floral arabesques, over 4,000 shops gleam with hand-woven silk carpets, antique Anatolian kilims, 22-karat gold filigree jewelry, hammered copperware, hand-painted Iznik ceramics, leather goods, and fragrant oriental perfumes. Entering through one of its 22 monumental gates, travelers immerse themselves in the age-old Middle Eastern art of tea-sipping and spirited bargaining with multilingual merchants whose families have occupied these stalls for generations.
