Kaleiçi Historic Old Town & Roman Harbor (Antalya)
Perched on towering limestone cliffs overlooking the crystalline turquoise Gulf of Antalya and the majestic Taurus Mountains, Kaleiçi (meaning 'Within the Castle') is the historic heart of the Turkish Riviera. Continuously inhabited since Attalos II, King of Pergamum, founded the port city of Attaleia in the 2nd century BC, the quarter is encircled by defensive stone fortifications bearing Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman architectural signatures. The grand threshold to Kaleiçi is Hadrian's Gate (Üçkapılar), an imperial triumphal marble archway erected in 130 AD. Within the walls lies a serene pedestrian maze of cobblestone lanes lined with restored 18th- and 19th-century timber-framed Ottoman mansions with projecting bay windows (cumbas), now converted into boutique luxury hotels, courtyard cafes, and artisan kilim shops. Steep stairways lead down through the cliffs to the picturesque Roman-era harbor, where excursion boats anchor beneath ancient fortress walls.
“The romantic historic heart of Antalya enclosed within ancient sea walls, boasting restored Ottoman mansions, Hadrian's Gate, and a Roman marina.”
