Wadi Shawka Mountain Trails & Pools
Located in the southern agricultural region of Ras Al Khaimah near the border with Sharjah, Wadi Shawka is a celebrated natural outdoor haven for hikers, campers, and adventure seekers. Formed by seasonal runoff from the Hajar Mountains, the wadi cuts through rugged rocky terrain characterized by acacia trees, dry riverbeds, and natural rock pools. One of the wadi's most famous features is the Shawka Staircase—a monumental stone stairway of over 500 steps built onto the mountain ridge, leading to an elevated observation summit overlooking the Shawka Dam reservoir and the valley. Beyond the stairs, a network of marked trails ranges from gentle 5-kilometer valley walks to challenging 15-kilometer loop hikes across scree ridges. During and following the winter rainy season, the wadi comes alive with natural freshwater pools, creating an enchanting desert oasis setting perfect for wild swimming, picnicking, and off-grid camping beneath the stars.
“A popular outdoor adventure valley in the Hajar foothills, famed for the Shawka Staircase, freshwater seasonal pools, and scenic hiking ridges.”
