Al Hoota Subterranean Cave
Nestled at the southern foot of Jebel Shams near Al Hamra, Al Hoota Cave is estimated to be over two million years old and is the only show cave open to the public in the Arabian Peninsula. Extending for five kilometers underground—with an 860-meter illuminated pathway accessible to visitors—the cave showcases a breathtaking wonderland of geological formations, including massive limestone stalactites, stalagmites, and delicate draperies shaped over millennia by mineral-rich seepage. A major highlight is the cave's subterranean lake system, reaching depths of 15 meters. The lightless aquatic ecosystem is home to the rare Blind Cave Fish (Garra barreimiae hootai), an extraordinary evolutionary marvel that has lost its vision and pigmentation to thrive in perpetual subterranean darkness. The visitor center includes a geological interactive exhibition and Oman's first electric narrow-gauge visitor train.
