Salalah Khareef Monsoon & Emerald Mist Mountains

In stark contrast to the scorched summer landscapes of the wider Arabian Peninsula, the Dhofar region of southern Oman undergoes an astonishing seasonal transformation known as the Khareef (Southwest Monsoon). From late June to early September, moisture-laden Indian Ocean winds sweep across the Dhofar mountains, cloaking the peaks in dense cool mist, perpetual drizzle, and transforming arid limestone cliffs into vibrant rolling emerald hills reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands. Salalah, the capital of Dhofar, becomes the focal point of Arabian summer travel. Ephemeral waterfalls plunge hundreds of meters down mountain amphitheaters at Ayn Athum, Ayn Khor, and Ayn Sahalnoot. Cattle and camels graze on lush mountain pastures beside roadside fruit plantations overflowing with fresh papayas, bananas, and coconuts. The region’s cool 25°C microclimate offers an incomparable oasis of respite during peak Gulf summer.
