Nizwa Fort & Historic Souq
Standing in the historic oasis heart of Al Dakhiliyah governorate, Nizwa Fort is Omanโs most visited national monument and an engineering triumph of military architecture. Constructed in the 1650s by Imam Sultan bin Saif Al Ya'rubi over twelve years following the expulsion of Portuguese forces, the fortress is distinguished by its colossal circular drum tower measuring 36 meters in diameter and 30 meters in height, filled with solid rock and gravel to withstand sustained heavy cannon bombardments. The fortress is equipped with ingenious defensive traps, including deep pitfalls, secret escape tunnels, and false stairways. Below the ramparts lies the vibrant Nizwa Souq, an active commercial center famous for producing the finest engraved silver khanjars in Oman, hand-spun clay pottery, Omani halwa confectionery simmering in large copper cauldrons, and the legendary Friday morning livestock market where Bedouin traders bargain over goats and camels with spirited theatricality.
