Dhayah Fort Hilltop Castle

Perched dramatically atop a 64-meter-high conical limestone hill north of Ras Al Khaimah city, Dhayah Fort is the only surviving hilltop military fortification in the United Arab Emirates. Originally fortified during the late Bronze Age (c. 1600 BCE), the current twin-towered mudbrick and stone castle was erected in the late 18th to early 19th century by the Qawasim tribe. The fort holds immense historical significance as the site of the final battle of the Persian Gulf Campaign of 1819. In December of that year, fewer than 400 local defenders held out bravely against heavily armed British naval troops and artillery before the eventual signing of the 1820 General Maritime Treaty. Visitors climb 239 stone steps up the ridge to reach the battlements. From the twin towers, the summit offers a commanding 360-degree panorama: lush date palm oases below, the turquoise Arabian Gulf to the west, and the towering ridges of the Hajar Mountains to the east.
