Paşabağ (Monks Valley) Fairy Chimneys
Situated between Göreme and Avanos, Paşabağ (meaning 'The Pasha’s Vineyard', historically known as Monks Valley) showcases Cappadocia's most dramatic, perfectly sculpted geological formations. Here, towering mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys rise out of fertile vineyards, featuring multiple stems crowned by dark, hard basalt caps that have miraculously resisted millions of years of wind and flash-flood erosion. The valley takes its historic name from Christian hermits (Stylites) who retreated here in the 4th and 5th centuries to escape worldly distractions. Hollowed into one of the triple-headed chimneys is a hermitage chapel and dwelling dedicated to Saint Simeon Stylites, who lived in isolation inside the stone pinnacle. Visitors wander freely along manicured trails winding between the monolithic stone pillars, framed by lush apricot orchards and wild thyme.
“The most striking collection of multi-headed mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys in Cappadocia, historically chosen by Christian anchorites for seclusion.”
