Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island

Anchored on the shores of Saadiyat Island, Louvre Abu Dhabi is a pioneering universal museum born from a historic intergovernmental agreement between the UAE and France. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, the museum appears as a museum city (medina) of 55 white cubic buildings floating on the azure waters of the Arabian Gulf. Its defining architectural tour de force is the colossal 180-meter dome. Composed of 7,850 unique metal stars layered across eight structural lattices, the dome filters the blazing desert sunlight into an enchanting, dappled pattern termed the 'Rain of Light' (Pluie de Lumière), reminiscent of sunlight filtering through the palm fronds of an ancient oasis. Unlike traditional Western museums organized strictly by geography, Louvre Abu Dhabi's chronological narrative curates masterworks from diverse global civilizations side by side. Visitors traverse human creativity from prehistoric fertility idols and Egyptian sarcophagi to masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh, and contemporary monumental sculptures by Ai Weiwei.
