Bimmah Sinkhole (Hawiyat Najm)
Located inside the manicured Hawiyat Najm Park near the coastal village of Dibab, Bimmah Sinkhole is a stunning geological crater measuring 50 by 70 meters wide and plunging 20 meters deep to a crystal-clear turquoise pool. While local Omani folklore poetically attributes its formation to a fallen meteorite or shooting star (hence 'Hawiyat Najm' or 'Falling Star Well'), geologists explain it as a classic dissolution sinkhole formed when subterranean limestone dissolved and collapsed. A well-maintained concrete staircase descends into the sunken amphitheater. The pool is fed by subterranean channels connecting directly to the Sea of Oman just 600 meters away, blending fresh mountain groundwater with ocean tides to produce buoyant brackish water. Swimmers can plunge into the translucent azure waters, while small indigenous fish nibble playfully at bathers’ feet along the submerged stone ledges.
“A spectacular natural limestone sinkhole filled with crystalline turquoise brackish water, linked by folklore to a fallen shooting star.”
