Al-Masmak Clay Fortress & Palace of Riyadh
Standing in the historic heart of downtown Riyadh near Al-Safah Square, Al-Masmak Fortress is an iconic symbol of the unification of Saudi Arabia. Built around 1865 out of thick clay and mudbrick, with four conical watchtowers commanding its corners, the fortress was the site of the legendary dawn raid led by young King Abdulaziz Al Saud in January 1902, an event that marked the beginning of modern Saudi statehood. The massive fortress walls, over a meter thick, served as both a defensive citadel and an ammunition garrison. Entering through the heavy palm-wood portal (Al-Khokha), visitors can still view the broken spear-point of Ibn Jiluwi lodged in the door from the historic assault. Inside, the fortress has been thoughtfully converted into an educational museum. Exhibitions narrate the unification campaigns, featuring historical weapons, vintage photography, traditional agricultural implements, and diorama displays detailing life in Najd over the past two centuries.
